New Year, Clearer You: 5 Resolutions for Protecting Your Vision in 2026
With 2026 underway, you have a fresh start. If you’re like a lot of people, you might have done some goal-setting for the new year. That may have meant planning to prioritize your health. Last year, Americans made New Year's resolutions to eat healthier and exercise more.
Any goal gets more manageable when you break it into smaller steps. If you want to prioritize your health in 2026, for example, you can make it easier by focusing on specific aspects of your wellness.
Hilla Steinberg, MD, and our team can support you in managing your ocular health this year. At our office on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City, Dr. Steinberg provides comprehensive eye care.
Adopting these resolutions helps you protect your vision in 2026 and beyond.
#1: Choose sunglasses with UV protection
The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage your eyes just like they do your skin. Make it a habit to protect yourself before heading outdoors.
Sunglasses provide an easy way to add a layer of protection. Make sure you choose pairs that specifically offer UV protection. They should have a label, often on the lens, that indicates they block ultraviolet rays.
#2: Use the 20-20-20 rule
Digital eye strain can take its toll. To protect your eyes from this type of fatigue, follow the 20-20-20 rule.
Per this rule, every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away.
Focusing on distant objects gives your eyes a break from the strain of constant near work. This can help you lower your risk of near-sightedness (myopia).
#3: Get moving regularly
Recent research highlights the connection between regular physical activity and greater ocular health. Aim for about 30 minutes of moderate activity per day. Even going for a brisk walk counts.
#4: Get a dilated eye exam
The National Eye Institute says that getting a dilated eye exam is the single best thing you can do for your eye health. During this type of exam, Dr. Steinberg can screen you for common vision-impacting conditions such as glaucoma and macular degeneration.
#5: Be proactive about what you learn
If Dr. Steinberg identifies any issues during your dilated eye exam, she will develop a plan to address them. Sticking with that plan helps you protect your vision through the years. That could mean using medicated eye drops and making lifestyle changes, for example.
Dr. Steinberg and our team are here to come alongside you and support you in protecting your vision in 2026 and beyond. For screening and care to support long-term eye health, call our office or book an appointment online today.
